Everyday care

Five common pet-care myths

Posted · Adapted from an Opal Paws Facebook post

Some habits feel kind but quietly put pets' health at risk. How many of these have you heard?

  1. "A wet nose means a healthy dog." Not necessarily. Look at the whole picture: energy, appetite and usual behaviour. Ask a vet if something seems off.
  2. "It's fine if my cat hardly drinks." It isn't. Cats need plenty of water too. Put out extra bowls, try a water fountain, or add some wet food.
  3. "Bones are good for calcium." Not safe. Bones can cut the digestive tract. Choose a proper source of nutrition instead.
  4. "Cats can drink milk regularly." Best not. Many adult cats are lactose intolerant and get upset stomachs. Clean water matters most.
  5. "A chubby pet is a cute pet." Cute isn't the same as healthy. Extra weight raises the risk of joint problems, heart disease and diabetes. Sensible portions and exercise are key.

This is general pet-care information, not a diagnosis. If your pet is in trouble, contact a vet as soon as you can.
